Laryngology
Modern diagnosis and microlaryngeal surgery for voice, swallowing, and laryngeal disease.
What is laryngology and when should you consult?
Laryngology covers the medical and surgical care of the larynx, vocal cords, and swallowing function. Hoarseness lasting more than 2 weeks, recurrent sore throat, dysphagia, chronic cough, and a "lump in the throat" sensation warrant laryngology evaluation. Modern laryngology uses stroboscopic laryngoscopy and fiberoptic endoscopy as standard diagnostics. Professional voice users (teachers, singers, broadcasters) receive specialised voice-rest and microlaryngeal surgery protocols.
What does voice quality reflect?
Voice is more than vocal-cord vibration — it is shaped by the whole diaphragm–laryngeal–resonance axis. Pathology starts at one point but affects the entire chain. So treatment is holistic: voice therapy, medical management (reflux, allergy), microsurgery when needed.
Stroboscopy — slow-motion observation of vocal-cord vibration — is the cornerstone diagnostic. Most vocal pathology missed by static fiberoptic exam becomes visible on stroboscopy.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Hoarseness exceeding 2 weeks without improvement requires laryngeal examination. The threshold is lower for smokers and individuals over 50.
- No. First-line is voice therapy and anti-reflux treatment if needed. Microlaryngeal surgery is considered when conservative therapy fails or for professional voice users with planned scheduling.
- 30–90 minutes under general anaesthesia. Same-day discharge is typical. A 7–10 day voice-rest protocol follows.
- Laryngopharyngeal reflux causes oedema and inflammation on the posterior vocal cords. Hoarseness, throat burning, chronic cough, and globus sensation are common. PPI therapy and lifestyle modification are foundational.
- Annual baseline stroboscopy, early evaluation at first symptoms, voice-coach coordination, immune support before performance/recording periods.
- Clinical swallow assessment → FEES (Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing) → VFSS (Videofluoroscopic Swallow Study) if needed. The plan is personalised from these results.
